Development History
From AI Day 2021 to Optimus Gen 2 & Gen 3.
How Tesla evolved Optimus from a concept announcement into a bipedal robot with 22-degree-of-freedom hands.
Aug 2021 · AI Day Announcement
First unveiled at Tesla’s inaugural AI Day on August 19, 2021. Tesla outlined a 5 ft 8 in, 125 lb humanoid robot that would reuse the cameras, FSD neural networks, and battery/motor expertise from Tesla’s electric vehicles.
Sept 2022 · “Bumblebee” Prototype
At AI Day 2022, Tesla demonstrated two working prototypes on stage: “Bumblebee” (built with off-the-shelf actuators, walking untethered for the first time) and a sleeker prototype featuring Tesla-designed actuators moving its arms.
Mar & Sept 2023 · Optimus Gen 1
Optimus Gen 1 walked alongside assembly stations, calibrated its own limbs in 3D space using vision, maintained single-leg yoga poses, and autonomously sorted colored blocks using end-to-end neural networks trained on video inputs.
Dec 2023 · Optimus Gen 2
Unveiled in December 2023 with all Tesla-designed rotary and linear actuators, a 30% faster walking speed, a 10 kg (22 lb) weight reduction, a 2-DoF articulated neck, articulated toe sections with foot force/torque sensors, and 11-DoF tactile hands delicate enough to poach a raw egg.
Oct–Nov 2024 · 22-DoF Hands & We, Robot
Featured at the October 2024 “We, Robot” event alongside Cybercab, followed in November 2024 by the reveal of 22-degree-of-freedom (DoF) forearm-actuated hands capable of catching tennis balls in mid-air. Target price estimated around $20,000–$30,000 at scale.
2025–2027 · v2.3, Gen 3 & Giga Texas
Led by Tesla AI VP Ashok Elluswamy, Optimus v2.3 toured London and Berlin in December 2025. In 2026, Tesla began installing first-generation production lines in Fremont and preparing high-volume Gigafactory Texas lines for 2027 commercial rollout powered by Tesla’s AI5/AI6 chips and Grok conversational AI.

EVS Motors Houston · Optimus Customization Program
How EVS Motors will customize & protect Tesla Optimus.
Every Optimus leaves the factory in an identical black-and-white/silver shell. Just as Houston Tesla owners bring their Model S, 3, X, Y, and Cybertruck to EVS Motors for wraps, PPF, and custom finishes, we are preparing bespoke customization for consumer and commercial Optimus units.
Custom Vinyl Wraps & Skins
Precision-plotted Inozetek color-change wraps in 117 gloss, matte, satin, metallic, and carbon-fiber finishes for Optimus torso, shoulder, arm, and leg shell panels — without interfering with joints, cameras, or thermal dissipation.
Self-Healing Paint Protection Film (PPF)
Working robots bump into counters, doorways, and equipment. We will offer clear and matte Inozetek INOClear+ and LLumar Valor PPF kits for high-contact torso, forearm, and shin panels to prevent scuffs and scratches.
