Why upgrade

Why Tesla owners change their suspension.

The factory setup is a compromise. An aftermarket kit lets you tune the car for what you care about most.

A smoother ride

If your Model 3 or Model Y feels stiff or jittery over broken pavement, a comfort-tuned kit can calm it down. Some kits are made just for that.

Sharper handling

Better shocks keep the tires in contact with the road and the body flatter in corners, so the car feels more planted.

A lower stance

Less wheel gap (the space between the tire and the fender) gives the car a lower, tighter look, especially with new wheels.

Set it your way

Adjustable kits let you pick the ride height and, on most coilovers, turn the damping softer or firmer with a knob.

What we install

From a softer ride to a full coilover setup.

Not sure what you need? Tell us how the car feels now and how you want it to feel. We’ll point you to the right parts.

Coilovers

Replace the factory shock and spring with one adjustable unit. You choose the ride height, and on most kits the damping too. The biggest change in ride and handling. Model 3 and Model Y share most of their suspension parts, so most coilover kits fit both. We confirm the exact kit for your car before ordering.

Damper-only kits

New shocks that keep your factory springs and factory ride height. A good pick if you want a better ride without lowering the car.

Lowering springs

Shorter springs that work with your factory shocks for a fixed, modest drop.

Lowering links (Model S / X)

For cars with air suspension. The links lower the car while it keeps its air suspension and ride-height settings.

Adjustable camber & toe arms

Let us correct the rear wheel angles after lowering, to stop inner tire wear. Tesla rear camber arms have a flat price: $678 for Model 3 / Y, $1,449 for Model S / X, installed.

Sway bars, top mounts & more

Thicker sway bars for flatter cornering, plus top mounts, end links and other parts that go with a full setup.

Juniper suspension retrofit for Model Y

Bring the refreshed 2025 Model Y (“Juniper”) suspension to an older Model Y for a better ride. Quoted in person.

Road & Track

Öhlins

Öhlins makes Road & Track shock absorber sets for many cars. For Teslas, that includes a Street Tuned DFV set (part no. TES MA00S1) and a Road & Track DFV set.

  • Öhlins says Road & Track gives “exceptional traction and control on track days while retaining a refined ride quality for road use.”
  • Its patented DFV (Dual Flow Valve) tunes compression and rebound separately, and opens more easily on small bumps for a supple ride. Öhlins uses DFV across the Road & Track range.
  • As described on Redwood’s Öhlins Road & Track listings: tuned for electric cars, adjustable ride height, more than 20 damping clicks, monotube design, salt-spray tested and a 2-year limited warranty.

Redwood Motorsports

Redwood builds Öhlins DFV-based coilover kits for Teslas and has sold them since 2019. It also sells Öhlins’ own Road & Track kits.

  • Öhlins DFV Long-Stroke coilovers, engineered by FPSpec for Redwood, in Grand Touring, Performance Sport and Competition Race/HPDE versions. Redwood lists 32 clicks of damping front and rear, adjustable height and a limited lifetime warranty.
  • FPX coilovers, valved to order in its Fremont lab, including a comfort-focused “Cloud-Spec” Grand Touring valving.
  • Damper-only kits (Öhlins DFV or FPX) that keep the factory springs and ride height, and can be upgraded to full coilovers later.
  • Adjustable rear camber and toe arms, front and rear sway bars, floating top hats and end links. Redwood recommends adjustable rear arms if you lower or raise the car 10 mm or more.

Adjustable arms and lowering links

N2itive

N2itive makes forged adjustable suspension arms and lowering links for Teslas.

  • Adjustable rear camber arms (3Y-3), toe arms (T3Y-3, T3Y-2) and Alignment Kit 3 (two camber and two toe arms), which N2itive says is designed to address the common inner tire wear issues.
  • RSX-4 and TARTAN lowering links for cars with air suspension. N2itive says the car keeps its active suspension damping and ride-height settings, each one lower. A built-in Vernier scale reads to 1/10 mm.
  • SX-2 and SX-P2 camber arms, TSX-2 toe arms and Alignment Kits 1 and 2, for inner tire wear (and acceleration shudder, per N2itive).
  • N2itive warns that lowering without adjustable arms can cause inner tire wear.

KW Suspensions

KW makes coilovers and suspension parts, including kits for Teslas.

  • V1 coilovers with damping pre-set at the factory and adjustable lowering; V3 coilovers with separate rebound (16 clicks) and compression (12 clicks) adjustment.
  • V3 Leveling for a small drop or none at all: KW lists a +5 to −20 mm range and near-stock ground clearance, for rough roads and speed bumps.
  • DDC adaptive coilovers, and a Tesla Top Mount Kit that KW says addresses noise from the factory strut mounts on the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y.
  • DDC ECU coilovers with Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes, also offered with KW’s HLS 4 hydraulic lift system.

Questions

Tesla suspension questions.

Why do people upgrade their Tesla’s suspension?

Mostly for four reasons: a smoother ride, sharper handling, a lower stance with less wheel gap, and being able to adjust the car to their taste. Some also want a setup for track days. We sell and install these brands for all makes and models, not just Teslas. The right parts depend on which of these matters most to you, so tell us your goals and we’ll suggest a kit.

My Model 3 or Model Y rides harsh. Can coilovers fix that?

Often, yes, with a comfort-focused kit that’s set up well. Some kits are made just for this: Redwood Motorsports offers “Grand Touring” valving and damper-only kits for Teslas, and Öhlins says its DFV valve opens more easily on small bumps for a supple ride. Track-focused setups ride firmer, so tell us how you drive.

What is wheel gap, and how do I get rid of it?

Wheel gap is the space between the top of the tire and the fender. Lowering the car shrinks it. Coilovers let you choose the height, lowering springs give a fixed drop, and on air-suspension Model S and Model X cars, lowering links lower every ride-height setting. For example, TEIN lists a drop of about 1.0 in. front and 1.2 in. rear for its FLEX Z kit on a Tesla Model Y.

Coilovers, lowering springs or lowering links: what’s the difference?

Coilovers replace the shock and spring with one adjustable unit, so you can set the ride height and, on most kits, the damping. Lowering springs work with your factory shocks for a set drop. Lowering links are for Model S and Model X with air suspension: N2itive says its links keep the air suspension’s damping and ride-height settings, each one lower. Damper-only kits keep the factory height and just change how the car rides.

Do I need an alignment after a suspension upgrade?

Yes. Lowering changes the wheel angles, especially rear camber, and that can wear the inside edge of your tires. N2itive warns that lowering without adjustable arms can cause inner tire wear, and Redwood recommends adjustable rear arms if you lower or raise the car 10 mm or more. We finish every suspension job with a 4-wheel alignment in-house ($285). See our tire and alignment services.

Can I adjust the ride later?

With an adjustable kit, yes. Many coilovers have a knob that changes the damping in steps: Redwood lists 32 clicks on its Öhlins kits, TEIN 16 levels on FLEX Z, and KW 16 rebound and 12 compression clicks on V3. Ride height is set on the threads. Bring the car back and we’ll reset it. A height change usually needs another alignment.

Will a lowered Tesla scrape on driveways and speed bumps?

The lower you go, the less clearance you have, so steep driveways and speed bumps need more care. If you mostly want a better ride, pick a mild drop or a kit that keeps the stock height, like a damper-only kit or KW’s V3 Leveling (KW lists a +5 to −20 mm range). We’ll help you pick a height that suits your daily drive.

Are these kits good for track days?

Several are built for it. Öhlins designs Road & Track for traction and control on track days with a refined ride on the road, and Redwood offers Performance Sport and Competition Race/HPDE versions of its Öhlins kits. Adjustable camber arms help with track alignment too.

Will aftermarket suspension affect my Tesla warranty?

Tesla decides what its warranty covers, and its warranty doesn’t cover damage caused by non-genuine parts. If your car is still under warranty and you’re unsure, ask Tesla before you upgrade. Warranty ending soon? Book a pre-warranty expiration inspection first.

How much does a suspension upgrade cost?

It depends on the kit, your car and any extras like arms or top mounts, so we quote parts and installation for your car. Get a quote or call 888-878-2213. A quote request isn’t a booked appointment: we call or email you to set a time.
